I was completely taken off guard by this book. I was so thrilled that this was such a breath of fresh air from new author Dani Pettrey. In her debut novel Submerged the first book of the Alaskan Courage Series, Pettrey packs in adventure, love, forgiveness, redemption, and even some humor. Here is what the publisher Bethany House has to say:
A sabotaged plane. Two dead deep-water divers. One single clue.
Bailey Craig vowed never to set foot in Yancey, Alaska, again. She has a past, and a reputation–and Yancey’s a town that doesn’t forget. She’s returned only to bury a loved one killed in the plane crash, but then dark evidence emerges and Bailey’s own expertise becomes invaluable for the case.
Cole McKenna can face dangerous rescue dives. He can face the fear a murderer may be threatening his town. But facing the reality of Bailey’s reappearance is a tougher challenge. She broke his heart… but doesn’t seem to be the same girl who left Yancey ten years ago. And he’s not the same guy she left behind.
Racing against the clock and a rising body count, Bailey and Cole must move beyond the hurts of their pasts to work together until the truth of what is hidden in the depths finally surfaces.
Bailey really did have a struggle coming back to Yancey. One that think was not over the top but one that we can all relate too. Her struggle to not only accept God’s forgiveness but to also forgive herself was very real. So seeing him again couldn’t have been easy.
Cole Mckenna was an intriguing character. At first I wondered if this character could even be real, he was so nice. As the book progressed we see his flaws as well which made him even more interesting.
The chemistry between the two character was fun, dare I even say real. I honestly never expected some of the ways the story twisted and turned. I loved how Bailey was smart and independent but still in need of God’s love. Sometimes we realize how much we need Him when faced with the “hard stuff” and that is exactly what Bailey found.
The plot and story line itself was well written with a bit of unpredictability and good clean action. Something that isn’t always put in a good balance. Pettrey has a knack for keeping the story moving and making you want to keep on reading. (No matter how late it is 🙂 ) The supporting characters are ones that I cannot wait to get to know better in the rest of the series!! Yes this is a series!!! On Pettrey’s website there is a countdown to the next book and I must say that I wish the clock would move faster.
If you like good clean action and adventure, read Submerged. If you like a love story, read Submerged. Even if you are looking for something new, read Submerged. And yes I am making sure my book club will be reading this one!
I received this book from Bethany House in exchange for my honest opinion. No other things were exchanged.
