Like most everyone now a days, we have been doing our best at cutting costs. I try my best with coupons, but I am not one of the super coupon people that walks into a store and ends up getting paid to take shop. I use coupons of course, just not as well as others. Anyway, about 7 months ago I was doing a search and I found a recipe to make my own laundry soap. I mean lets face it, I do laundry for five people, three of which are very dirty gentleman. So if I can cut that cost I am going to do it. So the other day I was making a batch of the detergent and I finished the box of Borax as well as a second box of Super Washing Soda . That is when it hit me I have made about 11 batches of soap since I started my journey. So that included 11 bars of Zote (I find it at Walmart for $0.97 a bar), a box of Borax for under five dollars and a box of Super Washing Soda for $3.24 (also at my local Walmart.) So in doing the math that is just under $23.oo for seven months of laundry.
Before I started making my own detergent I was spending $12.25 a month on one bottle of laundry detergent and my cloths were not coming as clean as they are now. So here is the super simple recipe:
1 Bar Zote (finely grated)
1 cup Borax
1 cup Super Washing Soda
After you grate the Zote dump the cup of Borax and cup of Super Washing Soda on the Zote, mix it for about five to ten minutes until the soap isn’t sticky and it looks like more of a powder. All you need is one TABLESPOON (yes you read that right) per load. 1-2 if the load is really dirty. That’s it!!
So I really do love this stuff, not only is it inexpensive to make, but it has also gotten a multiple of obnoxious stains out. For example grass, blood, grease, mud, and animal smell. (we happen to have a Basset Hound). It has also been amazing at not irritating my husbands eczema. So that is my random thought of the week! Here is to saving money wherever we can!!
